of the Month - December 2002
Bentley S2 Continental, 1961, #BC42LBY
James Young 4 Door Sports Saloon

This particularly elegant Bentley S2 Continental was delivered to a
client in Switzerland, the company's documents listed this one as having
been ordered by Madame Colombo. The car still is registered in the Alpine
Republic, now in the custody of a collector in Zurich. All in all 388
Bentley S2 Continental were made of which 40 were bodied by James Young;
the 4-door versions though are limited to tiny fraction.

 The
cars were sent to the coachbuilder as chassis cum engine. However the
appearance was slightly different to that shown in the contemporary
company photo; indeed firewall and engine compartment side panels were
fitted.
The 4-Door Sports Saloon was a creation of A.F. MacNeil, chief
designer of James Young and gifted with the talent to design most
attractive coachwork. At a quick glance James Young's Design No. CV100 was
almost indistinguishable from the "Flying Spur", H.J. Mulliner's
4-door version mounted on Bentley S2 Continental chassis. However the
chrome rear window surround, a continous swageline across the front and
rear wings and square push-buttons were characteristic of James Young.
