When
F. Henry Royce designed the legendary Rolls-Royce
Silver Ghost, he was particularly keen that the car could withstand
tremendous stress. The powerful engine and the sturdy chassis were
perfectly well tuned to give perfect service whatever any driver's demand
might be - considering the usually poor condition of roads of the period
before the Great War - especially in some colonies of the British Empire -
this was essential.
However
the designer certainly hadn't considered that ever armoured cars might be
based on the Rolls-Royce Ghost. Fitted with a turreted armoured hull these
vehicles were in action during the Great War in France, Russia, West- and
East-Africa as well as in the Near and Middle East. Rear axles were
modified for twin tyres (later quite often twin steel disc wheels front
and rear were found) and the Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost Armoured Car
remained in continuous operational service. Particularly in the desert
H.M.A.C. (His Majesty's Armoured Car") proved to be most reliable and
effective.
